Student Awards - 2020 Student Research Awards Program

Once again, the Hudson/Delaware Chapter (HDC) of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) is pleased to sponsor student research awards. These awards are meant to both recognize outstanding young scholars and encourage active participation in HDC SETAC by attending and presenting their work at the 2020 Spring Meeting. This year, we are also providing travel awards. These travel awards will include a $100 travel stipend as well as a waiver for student registration ($35 value) to the Spring meeting. With the invaluable support of our corporate sponsors and chapter members, we can offer up to two travel awards to our graduate and up to two travel awards to our undergraduate student members.

TRAVEL AWARDS: Application for the Student Travel Awards must be received by April 10th and include the following:

  1. Personal Statement (500 words). Please describe how SETACs values relate to your research, career, and personal goals with regards to the environmental sciences.
  2. Abstract for research to be presented at the local spring meeting. Abstracts should indicate all authors and affiliations with clear indication of presenting author and relevant contact information.

===> Please submit the required items to:; Subject: 2020 Student Travel Award. Travel Award recipients will be notified the week of April 13th. (It is best to register first, awards will be paid soon after and reimburse any paid registrations) Judging will be conducted by the HDC SETAC Board of Directors and will be based on the submitted materials.

RESEARCH (Poster) AWARDS: Abstracts should be received by April 10th (or sooner please) to be included in the agenda. Priority will be given to abstracts submitted by this abstract due date. Students are encouraged to submit abstracts for talks as well, but a poster must also be displayed to be eligible for student research awards.

  1. Graduate Student Poster Awards: Up to three cash awards ($200, $100 and $50) will be awarded to the best graduate student poster presenters at the Chapter meeting. To be eligible for the contest, abstracts MUST be submitted by the abstract due date.
  2. Undergraduate Student Poster Awards: Up to three cash awards ($100, $50 and $25) will be awarded to the best undergraduate student poster presenters at the Chapter meeting.

As timing permits, students should be prepared to give a brief overview (2-3 minutes) of their research poster in a “rapid-fire” session to the attendees of the student poster social.

Please forward this announcement to any and all students who may be interested.

Interactive Poster Session - "Rapid Fire"
Undergraduate and Graduate students will be asked to present their posters during a “rapid-fire” session in addition to having a poster at the normal poster social to encourage discussion of research taking place at local colleges and universities.  Each student will orally present their poster (as a PowerPoint slide) from the main screen in a 4 minute time-frame.  It is important to be concise and sell your experiment/poster in the allotted time!  The time limit is strict so careful preparation will be necessary.  The “rapid-fire” session will take place at the beginning of the poster social on the first day of the meeting.

*This short presentation is not meant to be a substitute to your poster presentation. Students will not be required to present in this "Rapid Fire" format but are highly encouraged. Poster prizes will be allocated only to those presenting a poster for display on Monday and Tuesday during the meeting and at the poster social.
